Ramadan 2020

Ramadan is an important time for the Muslim community all over the world and on Twitter. So every year, we introduce a new custom emoji, known as a hashflag to celebrate and observe this time.

For Ramadan 2020, I was tasked with illustrating the hashflag for the Ramadan hashtags.

The first and perhaps most important aspect of Ramadan is prayer. So here my approach was to look at mosques and the new crescent Moon, which marks the start of the month in the Islamic calendar - a key part of Islamic events and festivals, including Ramadan and Eid.

The second steer was centred around fasting, which is another important aspect of Ramadan. And breaking fast, known as Iftar, is often started with a prayer and the eating of dates and drinking of water.

The third aspect I explored was the lanterns, known as fanous lanterns. These have been a symbol of Ramadan for hundreds of years. For the Muslim community, it represents the light guiding the way.
